Musical Transcriptions and Arrangements

Musical transcriptions and arrangements have come back into the repertoire of serious musicians in the last twenty years. They can be a most interesting re-interpretation of what we all thought we knew well.

On this site, you will be able to purchase, for example, orchestral pieces arranged for piano, and music for choir arranged for chamber orchestra. You will also find popular pieces such as Harry Lime in a version for piano, and Fats Waller’s Handful of Keys for orchestra. There is even a piece (The Yellow Rose of Texas) dictated from a piano roll.

Some of Schubert’s neglected songs for men’s voices have been arranged for chamber orchestra (Der Gondelfahrer and Widerspruch). These are of moderate difficulty and could be played by a student orchestra; or, if you want something more light-hearted, you will find funk arrangements of Frère Jacques both for strings and woodwind (with piano).

Many of the solo piano arrangements come in three versions (beginner/intermediate/advanced), and, indeed, most pieces have been transcribed several different ways, e.g. for two pianos, piano duet, orchestra.

There are arrangements for pipe organ (e.g. the first movement of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.3) and pieces for choir and organ. You will also find some original compositions (“Fantasias”) based on folk songs, such as Scotch Mist, Irish Stew, and pieces based on folk songs such as Lilliburlero and The Miller of Dee. These also appear in a number of versions, e.g. orchestral, two-piano and solo piano.
